Hi all,
We often blithely go about our daily computing affairs, without undestanding the machinations of the past that have lead to "why things are the way they are".
We currently accept Arial as the default font for everything, but for decades past, Helveteca was looked upon as the all-purpose font.
"With its friendly, cheerful appearance and clean lines, it was universally embraced for a time by both the corporate and design worlds as a nearly perfect typeface to be used for anything and everything. "When in doubt, use Helvetica" was a common rule."
The following article goes on to describe the business partnerships and agreements that ultimately led to Arial being the default font for everything.
"[Arial] has spread like a virus through the typographic landscape and illustrates the pervasiveness of Microsoft’s influence in the world."
